Denver Airport Runway Tragedy: Officials Say Man Struck by Frontier Jet Died by Suicide
A tragic incident at Denver International Airport has drawn national attention after officials confirmed that a man fatally struck by a departing aircraft on a runway died by suicide.
Authorities identified the victim as 41-year-old Michael Mott, who was hit by a Frontier Airlines Airbus A321 late Friday night while the plane was preparing for takeoff from Denver to Los Angeles. According to airport officials, the collision occurred around 11:19 p.m. local time.
The Denver Medical Examiner’s Office stated that Mott died from multiple blunt and sharp force injuries. Officials believe the incident was intentional, though investigators said no suicide note has been discovered and some of Mott’s personal belongings, including his vehicle, remain missing.
Security footage released by airport authorities reportedly shows the man approaching and crossing the runway moments before the aircraft struck him. Officials explained that airport security cameras had initially been focused on a herd of deer outside the airport perimeter, making it difficult to immediately identify the trespasser.
Airport CEO Phil Washington said the man scaled an 8-foot fence topped with barbed wire in approximately 15 seconds and reached the runway within two minutes. Due to the short timeframe and the distance from the terminal, authorities were unable to intervene before the tragedy unfolded.
The incident also caused injuries to 12 passengers aboard the aircraft during the emergency evacuation that followed. Officials praised the flight crew and pilot for their quick response, noting that the situation could have been significantly worse.
Despite public questions about airport fencing and security measures, Denver International Airport emphasized that safety remains its highest priority. Officials noted that the airport spans 53 square miles and includes 36 miles of fencing, adding that even stronger barriers may not stop a determined individual.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it will not investigate the fatal collision itself because the matter falls outside its jurisdiction, though it may review the aircraft evacuation procedures.
The Denver Police Department continues to investigate the incident and is asking anyone with information about Michael Mott to come forward.
